Child Weight Concerns – A Healthy Approach

As a Nutritional Therapist I always tell my clients, no matter what shape or size you are, it should always be ‘health first’.

With society’s pressure to look a certain way, body confidence is a significant issue affecting our younger generations. We often hear about obesity problems in Ireland, but it is important to put an emphasis on health first and foremost, and the rest will follow.  We all have different genetic make ups, and our bodies naturally come in different shapes and sizes. We must remember this.

As a parent or child caregiver, I would urge you not to weigh yourself in front of a child. People are rarely satisfied with the number on the scales, no matter what it reads! Regular tracking of weight alters our overall mood and sets a negative tone which can lead to a damaging relationship with food.

Even more importantly, if you are worried about your child’s weight, be sensitive with how you discuss a solution. For example, instead of simply stating that certain foods will make them ‘fat’ or they cannot eat certain foods because they will ‘gain weight’, offer up non weight-related reasons.

You might try something like, ‘sugary foods damage our teeth’, or ‘fatty foods results in bad skin’.

Food choices must be taught, but also, demonstrated. Educate yourself, then teach your children to eat real wholesome food by setting a good example. If you don’t buy rubbish, they (and you) will not eat it. By not having fattening, sugary foods and drinks on offer at home, children are more prone to choose wisely when alone.

Try new foods every week. If you don’t like the taste the first time, try them more than once in different ways. Your taste buds will adapt.

Get cooking, and let your children help- this will make them more likely to try the finished product! If you work long hours, try batch cooking at the weekends. Not only is it convenient, but it will help you make healthier choices and stop you reaching for the unhealthy option.

Don’t over think it. Strive to keep the emphasis on health and exercise and watch your life transform.
